Piazza del Duomo

Catania

UNESCO World Heritage Site, the square whose present form is due to its reconstruction after the earthquake of 1693, is a typical example of baroque Catania, characterized by the contrast between the limestone and lava stone. Surrounded by the Palace of the Elephants, the seat of the municipality of Catania, and Palace of clerics, former seminary, is connected to the Cathedral of Sant'Agata by a passage that runs on Port Uzeda. At the center is the Elephant Fountain, or "u Liotru" symbol of the city. In this sumptuous square flow into three major roads: Etnea street, the Via Garibaldi and Via Vittorio Emanuele. Repaved with the end in lava, is now a 'pedestrian.
