Departing from the Port of Catania with a licensed local guide, this approximately 4-hour tour offers a fascinating journey through the wonders of the city at the foot of Mount Etna. Guests will be welcomed at the port and escorted aboard a comfortable coach to begin their exploration.
The tour begins at Piazza Duomo, the vibrant heart of Catania, home to the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, the city’s patron saint. The square is renowned for the Elephant Fountain, the symbol of Catania, and its stunning Baroque architecture. From there, a short walk leads to Via dei Crociferi, one of the most charming streets in the city, famous for its Baroque buildings and historic churches, including the Church of San Benedetto and the Church of San Francesco Borgia. Nearby stands Castel Ursino, a 13th-century fortress built by Emperor Frederick II, once located on the shoreline.
A brief stroll brings visitors to La Pescheria, Catania’s lively and colorful fish market. Here, travelers can soak in the authentic Sicilian atmosphere, admire an array of fresh local produce, and even sample some of the city’s flavorful street food specialties.
Next, the tour continues to Piazza Università, surrounded by some of Catania’s most significant historical buildings, such as the University Palace and Palazzo San Giuliano. The guide will share fascinating stories and anecdotes about these landmarks before concluding with a stop at the Teatro Massimo Bellini, a splendid example of 19th-century theatre architecture, dedicated to Catania-born composer Vincenzo Bellini. The guide will explain the theatre’s cultural and musical significance for the city.
At the end of the guided portion, there will be free time for participants to further explore the lively streets of Catania at their own pace, enjoy a walk, or shop for local products.
The tour concludes with the return journey by coach to the Port of Catania, in time for cruise reboarding.
