Trekking on Etna for expert enthusiasts

Etna Trekking – For Expert Hikers
Altitude 2,000 m – approx. 15 km – 6/7 hours – High difficulty
Departure from hotels in the Taormina, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni area.
A unique excursion for experienced hikers, exploring some of Mount Etna’s most stunning and dramatic landscapes. After a transfer to Rifugio Sapienza, the trek begins at the ancient Silvestri Craters and heads toward the Calcarazzi Hills, crossing surreal volcanic ash valleys and the historic eruption fractures from 1792, which once threatened the town of Zafferana.
The trail continues toward Monte Salifizio and then up to the panoramic ridge known as the “Schiena dell’Asino” (“Donkey’s Back”), overlooking the massive Valle del Bove, a natural amphitheater that collects millions of cubic meters of lava during each eruption. The view of the summit craters, especially the Southeast Crater (3,357 m a.s.l.), is truly breathtaking.
The route follows the edge of the Valle del Bove, passing above the Acqua Rocca degli Zappini spring and near the oldest beech tree on the volcano, before reaching Monte Zoccolaro for a magnificent view over Val Calanna. Return at the end of the hike.
